The Scandanavian duo of My Bubba (My Larsdotter and “Bubba” Tomasdottir) may not be your typical Fretboard Journal fare. But, during their recent visit to our offices, they thoroughly charmed us with their songwriting and their gorgeous harmonies.
Their instrumentats piqued our interest, as well. My plays a Norwegian lap harp (otherwise known as a cittra) that she estimates is around 120 years old. “It used to belong to my ex-boyfriend’s dead grandmother,” she admits. “I’m borrowing it, though.” It’s her first-and-only instrument.”
Meanwhile, Bubba plays an archtop guitar built by a Danish luthier named Yngve Barslev. It was built in Copenhagen around 1956, at the tail end of Barslev’s career. “It fit my temperament very well,” Bubba says, “dark and moody.”
Speaking of dark and moody, on this clip the pair performs “Ghost Sweat,” from their 2016 album, Big Bad Good.
