You may recall my September blog entry in which I reviewed the Buddy Holly tribute concert held in Hollywood on what would have been the bespectacled one’s 75th birthday. As your intrepid Fretboard Journal Field Editor, I shouldered the burden of trekking to the beautifully restored Music Box theater on Hollywood Boulevard to hang out during rehearsals, serve as guitar fetcher to the stars, and attend the invitation-only extravaganza featuring Stevie Nicks, Lyle Lovett, Chris Isaak, Graham Nash, Patrick Stump, Boz Scaggs, Raul Malo, Michelle Branch, Shawn Colvin, Paul Anka, Cobra Starship, Phil Everly, and guitar deities James Burton and Albert Lee. Yes, a colossal sacrifice. But, we here at Fretboard Journal will leave no stone unturned in our quest to serve The Guitar Geek Nation.
Don’t worry, though, we never Bogart all of the fun. The “Buddy Holly: Listen to Me” concert is coming to a PBS station near you during the week of December 3. As they (and apparently I) say, check your local listings. But, wait, there’s more. Or, actually, less. A preview of the concert awaits you on YouTube.
So, don some horn rimmed glasses, grab a Stratocaster, and revel in a full 5 minutes, 20 seconds of the concert highlights. Be sure click that pause icon when Lyle Lovett and James Burton hit the screen. Pay no attention to the long tall Texan. Focus on James and, in particular, on his cap. You see, I am now the proud owner and occasional wearer of that cap. I connected James with the concert promoters and with Lyle Lovett. Out of gratitude, James gave me that cap.
Mark your calendars for December 3, invite your friends over for a Hollyday (sorry, I couldn’t resist) party, and enjoy the full concert in all of its glory. Rest assured that I’ll be doing the same, while wearing THE cap.
