First, John Paul Jones produced an Uncle Earl CD and now it looks like Robert Plant is making a record with Alison Krauss. Jimmie Page better get on the ball and start working with a bluegrass band or he’ll miss the boat.-MJS

This short article from the Belfast Telegraph says that drivers in Ireland claim that listening to music makes them drive more safely. I’m not so sure about that. The only speeding ticket I ever got was when I was listening to the Ramones and not paying attention to how fast I was going. On a slightly related note, I always make a point to never listen to songs like “Leader of the Pack,” “Deadman’s Curve,” “Teen Angel” or any other tune that even mentions a car when I’m driving because I’m terrified of dying an ironic death. That’s also why I never listen to “Splish Splash” in the shower.-MJS

Louiefest ‘07 is a festival devoted to “Louie Louie,” which is perhaps the one song that every guitarist knows how to play, that will attempt to answer the question. (Here’s another page devoted to the song.) It will be held August 18 and 19 in Spanaway, Washington. If you can’t make it to Washington, the festival’s organizers have set up a “Louie Louie” video contest where you can upload a video of you playing your version of the song. Sadly, Louiefest is a family affair so you can’t use the dirty lyrics that the FBI thought they were hearing when the song was first released but, thanks to the Smoking Gun, you can read them. Me gotta go now…-MJS

The White Stripes played an unannounced gig in Canada and played only one note. The audience didn’t seem to mind.-MJS

On this day in 1962, Telstar I, America’s first telecommunications satellite was launched. Since then, it seems like a gazillion satellites have been launched, but none of them inspired a melody like the one the Tornados recorded in Joe Meek’s studio way back when. Lou Reed gave it a good try, though.-MJS

I like the way the Record Envelope blog combines simplicity and cool design. The FIQ (Fretted Instrument Quotient) of this site is very low, but I suppose a few of these sleeves once contained records that may have featured a guitarist or bass player.-MJS

All the cool kids are having turntables mounted in the dashboards of their cars. Oh wait, this ad comes from 1956. Never mind.-MJS

This website has loads of information about folks who have made cover albums of Bob Dylan songs. You know, Dylan is most famous for his lyrics so I was surprised to find so many instrumental versions.-MJS

Police in Naples have busted a mafia radio station where messages were passed along to jailed gang members, who were listening in, by making song requests with coded dedications. So, what songs were requested? Little Walter’s “Boom Boom, (Out Go the Lights)?” Jim Reeves’ “He’ll Have To Go?” One request they wouldn’t have taken is Bernie Torme’s “Shoot the DJ.” Can you think of other titles?-MJS

In honor of Bob Dylan’s birthday, here’s a link to Michael Gray’s blog, the guy who compiled the Bob Dylan Encylopedia.-MJS
