We’ve completed our third issue and it’s our favorite to date. Singer-songwriter Guy Clark is our cover story. Inside are interviews with Bill Collings of Collings Guitars, Bob Taylor (on his new R. Taylor guitars), banjo legend Wade Mainer and much, much more. It’ll show up in most stores around the first week of August but subscribers should be getting their copies even sooner. As always, if you want to collect each FJ, the best way is to subscribe. We’ve already sold out of issue one!

Well, sooner or later it had to happen. After numerous requests for FJ shirts, stickers, etc., we finally caved in and launched a CafePress site. We’ve got FJ shirts, sweatshirts, golf caps, and coffee mugs for now in our store (the stickers are coming later, I promise). Most garments feature the official FJ “bug” on the front and our stately logo on the back, though we’re open to feedback on items you’d actually wear/use (just shoot one of us an email). Anyhow, now you can show your support of our magazine and be the coolest player on your block with some official FJ duds. –JV

Among the questions that come up re: our magazine, one of the most common is “Who are you guys?” We realize it’s not the strangest question. Most magazines launch with a big media push and a ton of corporate backing, but that’s not how we operate. The Fretboard Journal, proudly, isn’t affiliated to any media conglomerate; we’re just a bunch of serious musical instrument lovers who want to create a different kind of magazine for fellow instrument lovers. Our staff is small, and every single one of us is a player. It’s our goal to create a smart magazine for fellow musicians, something that looks as nice as the instruments we covet. We want the FJ to be something that we can proudly put on our coffee tables and bookshelves and show off to our music friends.
That said, we’re always on the lookout for fellow players who have a good story to tell. So if you’ve ever had the bug to write an article or if you just have a good tale for us to cover–an interesting instrument, a gig gone bad, a holy grail find, or just a luthier you know and love–by all means, drop us a line. First and foremost, we’re fellow collectors, and we’d love to discuss ideas with you. -JV

Welcome to the official Fretboard Journal Blog! We realize three months between each issue of our magazine is quite a wait, so with this handy medium, we’re hoping to fill you in with updates, news from the musical instrument universe, reviews of great CDs/books, concert reviews, and much more. It’s basically a glimpse into the inner workings of our magazine, from what’s on our stereo to what’s on our minds.
Some random news from the field: In about a week’s time, we’ll be attending musical instrument orgy known as the NAMM Show, in Anaheim, Calif. FJ representatives will be on-hand to try out new gear, talk to writers for our forthcoming issues and overhear a lot of bass amps being tested to their limits (we actually dread the last part). We’ll be posting news from the convention as we get it, whether it’s a cool archtop we just can’t get enough of or just good gossip. With any luck, we’ll have a bit of each.
As always, we value your feedback. So if you have any ideas for magazine articles you’re dying to see, great luthiers we need to cover, or just plain general constructive criticism, we’d love to hear about it. You can always email us at info@fretboardjournal.com And if you like what you’re seeing in our mag, be sure to tell your pals, local guitar store, etc. As an independent media outlet, we rely on word-of-mouth advertising from our faithful readers.
