Less Paul
June 15th, 2007
These photos are from an eBay auction of a TV Yellow 1959 Les Paul Special. The seller got it from the original owner who bought it new in 1959 and did all the “repair” work himself. Apparently the hole in the headstock was an unsucceful attempt to turn the guitar into a seven-string. Amazingly, the pickups and wiring harness are basically untouched. It’s not often that you see a repair job that’s so off-the-charts bad that it enters into the realm of folk art. I hope whoever gets it leaves it in its “as found” condition. And that someone makes a relic version of it. If anyone out there has similar photos of horrific repair jobs, I’d love to post them here on the blog.-MJS (Thanks, Andy, for the post title.)

If the original owner bought this “to sing with Jesus”, then what on earth were they doing in his church for it to end up so badly smashed up?

I am certainly no expert thoughI play one in my own mind- but what a bodge job! I can’t imagine what would cause somebody to undertake such blacksmithing efforts on a guitar. Scary!

That is hands down.. the worst repair work I have ever seen. You said it.. enters the realm of folk art. Unbelievable.
Also, I’m blown away that it still sold for two thousand dollars. Do you think the winner will ‘repair’ it proper..if that’s even possible. Or just show off the botch job. In that case, that would be a lot of money to show off a screw up, but would it be possible to restore it?

Does any one know the value of a 1959 Les Paul Special, 93 series serial number ?
