Here’s a trailer for an interesting looking documentary about the 1959 Gibson Les Paul. You know, I can’t think of another instrument where you could make a documentary about a model from a single year. I can see doing something about early-1950s Teles, mid-1950s Strats, prewar D-28s, Lloyd Loar-era F-5s, prewar flathead Mastertone banjos but there is something magical about a sunburst Les Paul Standard from 1959.-MJS

Well, it’s more of a bit part, at least according to Tom Tomorrow’s blog. Okay, it’s a prop you can barely see. They’re filming scenes for the movie near his house and the filmmakers dressed a street to look like it’s 1957 and there’s a new Strat in the window of a music store. At least it has the proper sunburst for 1957, which is more than most films manage to do.-MJS

I have to say that’s not a big surprise. I would hardly expect them to pick polka music or salsa.-MJS

Before Jason and I started the Fretboard Journal, we published two issues of a magazine called the Ukulele Occasional. In issue 2 we published an article by Gregg Miner about about the harp ukulele. I’m very pleased to see that Gregg has posted the article online and, as an added bonus, he’s added more info and more pictures than the print version. Is this Internet thing cool, or what?-MJS

I like the way the Record Envelope blog combines simplicity and cool design. The FIQ (Fretted Instrument Quotient) of this site is very low, but I suppose a few of these sleeves once contained records that may have featured a guitarist or bass player.-MJS

Mandolin is the name of a new gated communuty in Florida. If that starts a trend in the area, in a few years all the good instrument names will be taken and people will be moving into subdivisions like Nose-Flute Acres and Sackbutt Falls.-MJS

All the cool kids are having turntables mounted in the dashboards of their cars. Oh wait, this ad comes from 1956. Never mind.-MJS

This website has loads of information about folks who have made cover albums of Bob Dylan songs. You know, Dylan is most famous for his lyrics so I was surprised to find so many instrumental versions.-MJS

Well, it’s more like this giant banjo was used as a platform for the winning entry in the 2007 Red Bull Nashville Flugtag, which was a sort of flying mountain top. The builders did a great job making the giant banjo, but from the dimensions it looks more like a banjo-uke than a regular 5-string to me.-MJS

Now here’s something you don’t see every day. Unless you own it, in which case you do. Anyway, Archtop.com is selling a 1934 D’Angelico that was made for Selmer. (Check out the headstock) According to D’Angelico’s ledger, he added the Maccaferri-ish cutaway at a later date, so it’s not quite as originally Selmer-y as it looks. The description says it was made for Selmer New York not Selmer Paris, so when it was built it was unlikely that D’Angelico was aware of the French guitars Mario Maccaferri had designed for the European arm of the company in 1932 and 1933. Still, it’s a very cool item.-MJS
