Jimmy Buffet is auctioning off one of his signature model Martins that has been autographed by him and all 21 models who appeared in the 2007 Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. The money will go to the New Orleans Musicians Clinic and the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity, which are two worthy charities. The auction ends on February 23 and as of the 22nd the highest bid was over $40,000, so if you have loads of money, you’d better hurry if you want it.-MJS

Orville Wright, one of the airplane inventin’ Wright Brothers, played mandolin. Not only that, he played it quite a bit as this letter from his sister Katharine shows. “Orv has begun lessons on his mandolin and we are getting even with the neighborhood for the noise they have made on pianos. He sits around and picks that thing until I can hardly stay in the house.” If you want to examine the instrument that caused all that ruckus, you can go see it at the Smithsonian.-MJS

Mary Kaye, who entered guitar lore when she appeared in the 1956 Fender catalog holding a custom blond Strat with gold hardware that has unofficially been known ever since as the Mary Kaye model, passed away on February 17, 2007. She played the lounge scene in Las Vegas for years and recorded a number of LPs in the 1950s and 1960s. Ironically, although her name will be forever linked with the Fender Strat, she almost always played a D’Angelico archtop.-MJS

Charlie Poole’s 1925 recording of “Don’t let Your Deal Go Down” has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. He joins other legends like Django Reinhardt, Robert Johnson, B.B. King, Bob Wills and the Beatles. -MJS

This morning I got a message saying that one of the ten-foot tall art guitars that are on display in Austin was stolen over the weekend. This evening I found out that it was merely tucked away after someone tried to steal it. I’m glad to hear it’s back.-MJS
