Princess Ka’iulani’s handmade music cabinet is being auctioned on eBay. She was the niece of Queen LiliÊ»uokalani, Hawaii’s last reigning monarch and the composer of “Aloha Oe,” and, like most of her family, she was a skilled and enthusiastic musician. She played piano, guitar and, of course, ukulele. If you have 6.5 million bucks burning a hole in your pocket–that’s the Buy it Now price– this music cabinet would make a nice addition to your uke collection.-MJS

Tom Walzem of the Neptunes kindly sent these photos he shot of the best tattoos from the 2007 NAMM Show. I guess she’ll never work for Gibson. Click on the photo to see larger versions. The detail work is amazing.-MJS

Anyway, this guitar stand is made by a company called Paparwark and it flips over and turns into a stool. There’s no price, and it comes from the Shetland Islands so ordering one will not be easy, but you might be able to find out more info here.-MJS

Dodge’s Sundodgers perform on, from the left, a bass banjo, a banjo-mandolin, a banjo-uke, a tenor banjo and a guitar banjo. And no, five banjos are not too many banjos.-MJS

If you’re in the Tacoma area this weekend, you should consider going to the Wintergrass Bluegrass Festival. If you’re already planning to attend, make sure to stop by the Fretboard Journal booth and say hello to Jason and Marc, who will be manning it. Also, we, along with the Mandolin Cafe, are co-sponsoring the Midnight Mandolin concert on Friday with Mike Marshall, Hamilton de Holanda and Chris Thile, which looks like it wil be a blast.-MJS

Zachary Guitars is making instruments out of Ikea bedside tables. The site claims they can get three guitar bodies out of one $15 table. They don’t mention which table they’re using, but I’m guessing it’s this one called the Rast.-MJS (Via Boing Boing)

Pandora, the online streaming music service, has just launched a series of podcasts devoted to various aspects of music. The one that caught my ear was this one about guitar effects. Guitarist Patrick Green explains and demonstrates Dick Dale’s tremolo, Jimi Hendrix’s distortion, the Edge’s use of delay and the wah wah sound of funk guitarists. It’s geared to non-guitarists, but there is some interesting stuff that even advanced pickers can enjoy. Pandora has posted a list of upcoming podcasts, many of which will appeal the FJ readers.-MJS
