Pagan Island
April 28th, 2006
Bird of Paradise was one of the most popular plays of the early part of the 20th century, and, because the touring company featured real Hawaiian musicians like steel guitar pioneer Joseph Kekuku, it helped popularize Hawaiian music wherever it was performed. Film historians will tell you it was twice made into a movie, once in 1932 with Joel McCrea as the sailor who falls in love with an island maiden, played by Dolores DelRio, and again in 1951 with Louis Jordan and Debra Paget in the same roles. For some reason, the 1961 knock-off, entitled Pagan Island, never gets mentioned. Perhaps this trailer for the movie explains why.–MJS (via Boing Boing!)
