The Mandolin Cafe has added a stolen instrument category to their classified ad section. In a nice touch, they’ll bend the rules of the site and allow stolen non-mandolin family instruments to be listed. And, they’ve also set up a Google Map to show where the instruments were stolen from. Good work, guys!–MJS

These Guitar Hero sculptures are all of rockers like Slash, Zakk Wylde and Angus Young–other styles of music produce guitar heroes, too, you know–but they are cute, nonetheless. Rock on mini–dudes, rock on.–mjs

Bird of Paradise was one of the most popular plays of the early part of the 20th century, and, because the touring company featured real Hawaiian musicians like steel guitar pioneer Joseph Kekuku, it helped popularize Hawaiian music wherever it was performed. Film historians will tell you it was twice made into a movie, once in 1932 with Joel McCrea as the sailor who falls in love with an island maiden, played by Dolores DelRio, and again in 1951 with Louis Jordan and Debra Paget in the same roles. For some reason, the 1961 knock-off, entitled Pagan Island, never gets mentioned. Perhaps this trailer for the movie explains why.–MJS (via Boing Boing!)

Back on March 17th I posted about how Tom Lunt, the co-founder of the great Numero Group label, was diagnosed with a brain tumor and how he started a contest to name it. Well, I’m very happy to report that the tumor is out, it has a name and Tom is doing well. To find out who won the contest, you can go here. -MJS

If it’s anything like the movie, this play won’t really be about Johnny Guitar, but it still looks like it could be good.-MJS

Rigel has always been at the forefront of innovative, modern mandolin designs. And the gang just posted some sneak peek shots of their latest creations, most of which are headed to Merlefest. They’re some of the most colorful mandolins we’ve ever seen, and I can bet they all sound pretty dang great, too. Who needs a hot rod or sports car when you can get a mandolin that looks this fast?
