I mean, just when you think you’ve seen everything, along comes something like the Mikey Guitar, which can go from being a fretted instrument to a fretless one at the flip of a switch. WordPress database error: [Can't open file: 'wp_comments.MYI' (errno: 144)] Santa Cruz Guitar CompanyOne of the cool things about the NAMM show is that a lot of booths will have live perfomances from very good musicians. At SCGC, for example, SONiA of dissapear fear played a few sets on her signature model guitar. Richard Hoover, the founder of SCGC, was kind enough to display issues of the FJ in his booth, as you can see in the last photo. Sadly, all of his copies vanished before the show ended. Whoever walked off with them showed good taste but lousy morals. –MJS

I always thought of them as something of a brash newcomer, but somewhere along the line, they’ve become elder statesmen. Anyway, to celebrate, they have reissued some famous guitars from their past, including, from left to right, the Josh White Model, the Glen Campbell 6-string, the Glen Campbell 12-string and the Balladeer. The guitar in the tube is Old Number 6, the first playable Ovation prototype. Apparently, Old Numbers 1 through 5 were just body “bowls” that were built to test the molding process. -MJS

WordPress database error: [Can't open file: 'wp_comments.MYI' (errno: 144)] Bob MoogAs most of you have probably heard, the electronic musical instrument pioneer Bob Moog passed away late last year. At this year’s NAMM Show, the Moog booth had a photo of Bob on display that people would stop by and write tributes on. It was touching to see the that the people stopping by included leather-clad rockers, computer nerds, jazzbos and music industry suits, among many others. Nothing brings musicians together quite like a great musical instrument, and Bob Moog made some of the best. Just check out his latest Etherwave Pro theremin, which is beautiful. –MJS

WordPress database error: [Can't open file: 'wp_comments.MYI' (errno: 144)] CollingsBefore the show, there were rumors flying around about the electric guitars Collings was working on. Well, here they are. The two on the left were semi-hollowbody instruments, the blond one in the middle was a chambered semi-solidbody, and the maroon on the right was a slim acoustic with a floating pickup. Collings didn’t have an amp set up in the booth, so I couldn’t try them plugged in, but they sure played well. There were no prices set as of the show. -MJS
